Aparte Walvis prent. Beached bowhead whale. Édouard Traviès is regarded as one of the best French scientific artists and is most known for his lithograph drawings of birds. Travies' original drawings were published as both engravings and lithographs. When producing his own printed works, Travies always chose to use lithography, while other artists who made use of the drawings often opted for copper-plate engravings. The event of a stranded whale has always stimulated public interest. This fanciful print shows a group of 19th century French fisherman inspecting the greenland whale on a ice floe. In the 1800s whales generated public fascination because they were mysterious animals, not well understood or studied. Lithographs such as this one provided the public with an opportunity to view the mythical creature.
