Prachtig grote prent van het eiland Neira! Original copperengraving, hand coloured. Early view of the East Indies. François Valentijn (17 April 1666 – 6 August 1727) was a Dutch minister, naturalist and author of: Oud en Nieuw Oost-Indiën ("Old and New East-India") describes the history of the Dutch East India Company and the countries of the Far East. Valentijn made the travel to the Indies, and probably had access to the V.O.C.'s archive of maps and geographic trade secrets, which they had always guarded jealously. This work was and is the bible about the V.O.C in the Indies. In fact, the Dordrecht pastor Valentijn was severely in violation when he published the first book Oud en Nieuw Oost-Indien, after thirty years of traveling in the tropics. The VOC absolutely did not want former servants to publish anything about the colonies or about their service! More information on: Wikipedia.
